What is Peer Tutoring?

Peer Tutoring is a teaching method used in schools, where a student in need of educational assistance use student tutors in order to better their understanding of a specific topic. In other words, students teach other students. It has been proven to be, at times, more beneficial to many students than having an adult tutor (see right).

Customized Learning

Each student has different educational needs and that is completely expected. As a result, each tutor works with each student individually in order to develop a comprehensive plan that will work well with that student.

Proven Benefits of Peer Tutoring

Various studies have proven the many benefits of one-on-one peer tutoring. The success originates from the student's ability to ask questions more often, with immediate responses, as well as spend more time on a specific topic. While this can also be achieved with a one-on-one session with the teacher, there are some benefits to having a student tutor rather than a teacher. Often, when a student asks the teacher for clarification on a topic, the teacher typically provides the same explanation as in class, while a peer tutor can provide a new perspective. Also, some students may be more comfortable interacting with a fellow peer than a teacher.

Different Students
Require Different
Approaches to Learning

For many students, in-person learning was difficult enough, and some may have met with the teacher during office hours. Learning virtually is even more challenging, often without the benefit of going to the teacher for help. With peer tutoring, students can learn in their own way, at their own pace.
